Make a Splash: READ and Make Waves @ Your Library:
May 24-July 30, 2010
Our summer reading programs for children pre-school through high school have started.
This year everyone will keep track of time spent reading. For kids birth through 6th grade, stop by to pick up your blue 5 HOUR READING LOG at the library.  Beginning June 7 readers may bring their reading logs back to the library, register the first level of reading, get more reading challenges and claim small prizes. In addition to the reading challenge there will be special programs and events.  Live owls, puppets, and a movie with treats in June, magicians, a book author, storyteller, and talent show in July.  All reading goals must be completed and prizes claimed in the library by 4 p.m., Friday, July 30, when the summer reading program ends.

Some Special Events listed below are free and open to the public.

Programs requiring registration noted in green with their sign-up limit listed.

Which Library Card is Best For You?:
May 2 - May 8
The Sycamore Public Library has made changes to the Circulation Policy regarding library cards so that you are in charge of who sees what, and we can make sure that we consistently offer you the level of privacy and confidentiality you desire.

We now offer three types of library cards; a family card, an adult personal card, and a child personal card. The family card allows all agreeing household members one library card number that is shared between family members. This means that you can pick up materials for any member listed on that family card. The adult and child personal card are for one individual only. The person listed on that card is the only person who can borrow materials on that card, and the only person who can pick up materials requested on that card.

For complete details about the three types of library cards follow the link. To read the newly revised Circulation Policy follow this link.

If you already have library cards and you want to merge into the new family card, we ask that you bring all existing library cards and family members to the library to make the change. Your cards need to be clear of fines and borrowed items. It takes a bit of time to make all of the necessary changes so we appreciate your patience while we get used to these new procedures.

Beginning June 1st, all existing cards that have not been changed, will be considered personal cards.

There are also materials on the Mexican culture and festivals of Spain. We hope that you will share the colorful and complex cultures of the world with your children.

SPLAG - Teen Advisory Group

SPLAG, the Sycamore Public Library Advisory Group, is a teen organization comprised of 7th – 12th graders in the community.  SPLAG runs library book sales and relies on money earned at these sales to fund the group’s activities and purchases.

SPLAG has made many contributions to SPL’s Young Adult Department including a neon sign, an area rug, and other décor to highlight the space.  The group has selected and purchased CDs and DVDs to add to the library’s general collection.

SPLAG members take part in one meeting as well as one additional group activity every month.  SPLAG meetings are scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month during the school year.  New voices and ideas are always appreciated.

To be approved as a SPLAG member: Click this link to download the application and bring it to the Youth Services Desk located on the 1st floor of the Sycamore Public Library. Email Evelyn with any questions at evelynw@sycamorelibrary.org

First meeting of the 2010-2011 school year: Wednesday, September 8 @ 3:40 p.m.  New members welcome.
